Flats Sock Sweaters

This project goes with the adorable dolls in the Quiltsmart Fusible Flats Pack.

Materials Needed:
Quiltsmart Interfacing: Fusible Flats Girl or Boy Clothes Panel.
Sock: Adult size is best.
Back: scrap piece of cotton, slightly larger than the interfacing piece that you choose from the panel.  (CAUTION - I showed the back here so you would see why I recommend a cotton for the back, rather than knit from the sock - the knit fabric stretches.)
1 piece of 1/2" wide Velcro (TM) x 1.5" long.
Batting:  Fusible batting or regular batting, same size as cotton.
Matching or contrasting thread.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1) Cut sock above the heel, and along one fold to open up the calf part of the sock.

2) Roughly cut around interfacing Girl or  Boy coat pattern (or t-shirt for short sleeves).  Place the rough side (glue side) of the interfacing to the wrong side of the sock placing the interfacing over the desired motifs on the sock.  Fuse.

3)  Cut out on the solid  line - simplify the lines of the coat to look like a sweater by cutting a smooth line around the neck, and by cutting off the cuff area of the sleeve.

4) With sharp small scissors, trim out the parts inside the boys coat underarm area.

5)  Place the batting to the wrong side of the back piece.  Fuse it if it is fusible batting.  Line up the "sweater" with the back, and position the Velcro under the arm (where the doll Velcro will match it).  Stitch around the edges of the Velcro.  You can also write with permanent fabric marker on the back - "S" for sweater.  You could also put color names, the child's name...etc.

6) Position the sweater over the batting side, lining up the top of the Velcro to the underarm of the sweater.

7) From the top (sweater side) straight-stitch along the edge (about 1/8th of an inch from the raw edge.

From the back, you see the sweater shape.

8) From the right side, cut around the sweater, even with the raw edge.  Cut out the inner arm area also.

9) Zig-zag around all raw edges with contrast or blending thread.

Dress up the flats in holiday sweaters (perhaps an "Ugly" Sweater...ha ha) for your little one, a school classroom, or a cute holiday decoration!
Sometimes I make the Boy doll pattern (arms on hips) and dress the doll with the boy and/or girl clothes designs.  I noticed while my granddaughter was playing with the Flats that she was interchanging the clothes - as most of the clothes will fit both the Girl and the Boy dolls.  The Long Sleeve Coat is one that is specific to the Girl or Boy figures.

I keep "my" flats in an old (lol, I had one of these) American Tourister Train Case - it is perfect for the dolls and their clothes and pets. Have fun with the flats!

Oh lucky day.....
Mattie
