Hearts & Crafts Project #9: Hearts Four You Quilt Block

Welcome to Mattie's Hearts & Crafts Blog Series!

This heart quilt block is super sweet!  It can also be sewn up into a cute table mat or adorable little pillow. A great block for an heirloom quilt made with dresses or shirts from a little one.
STANDARD METHOD:  Zigzag Applique, "Zigzapping"
MATERIALS:
(4) 6.5" squares for hearts (we used 2 red, 2 pink)
4 Quiltsmart Sweet Hearts LARGE hearts
Background: 14" square

INSTRUCTIONS: (Read first to get the gist of it!)

1) Cut fabrics as listed.  In this project, the small inside hearts are not used.

NOTE:  If you would like to save them, stitch them to the fabric of your choice as in previous projects "Mug Mat" or "Tea Towel" OR carefully cut them out just barely outside the dashed line that goes around them.

If you are not going to be using the small heart, just slit along the dotted line for later turning.

 2) Place interfacing rough side (glue dot side) to RIGHT side of  heart fabric. Stitch on the LARGE solid line.
TIP: The smaller the stitch, the smoother the curve.  A 2.0mm or 1-5mm is great on this project.
NOTE: You could certainly make this pattern with the small hearts only.  Or, you could use small hearts zigzagged on the Large hearts.  It would look similar to the traditional Ohio Rose quilt pattern.
 3) Trim on the dashed line.  Clip at the top middle angle.

4) Turn right side out.  Use a pointer-creaser to get a great smooth line and points.
TIP: Keep the tool in between the fabric seam, not next to the interfacing!
TIP: I like to use the rounded end of the pointer-creaser first, ten the pointed end at the corners or points or to sharpen the seams a bit.  Be very careful!

5) Layer the Hearts as close as you wish on your background.
6) Zigzagg applique - "ZIGZAPP!" around hearts, going around them in a figure-8.
Keep the stitch on the heart, with the needle just piercing the background fabric.  I like a 1.5"mm width and a 2.5" mm length, but use what feels comfy.
7) Add a button or yo-yo if you wish in the middle.

Terri, thanks for sewing! Cute block!
