Mondo Boo
Make this cute door banner/tablemat from a Mondo Bag Rectangle. These instructions are basic instructions for the ghost, with more detailed method instructions found at the links below.
Materials: Mondo Bag Interfacing: 1 rectangle (4 x 12 grid) makes 1 ghost. 4 rectangles make up into 1 Mondo bag. There are packs with instructions, and refill packs. Click here for Mondo Bag and see the different ways you can purchase the interfacing. There are also videos!
GHOST: A variety of tone on tone white fabrics to total (52) 2.5" squares
EYES: (2) black 2.5" squares
BACKGROUND: (6) orange 2.5" squares
BACKING & BATTING: approximately 12" x 28" of each. Ghost finishes theoretically at 8" x 24".
BINDING: (2) 2.5" Width of Fabric strips.
Other: I added a little red plastic heart - because Ghosts have a Bootiful heart, too!
INSTRUCTIONS:
NOTE: There are several ways to sew the half-square triangle or half-squares on to the grid. This is just one of them. See our PiX Smart Grid for more ways and for a lot more information. This method here is for laying down the white squares first.
1) From the smooth side of the interfacing, draw diagonal lines on the each of the orange/white fabric positions. Draw a vertical line down the center of each of the black/white fabric positions.
2) For the squares that will be orange/white, "lop" off the corner of the white square about 1/2" from the diagonal line. For the black/white squares, "lop" off vertically, about 1/2" beyond the center line.Rectangle backside after stitching on the diagonals.
Place the background orange squares on top of the white squares, and the black squares on top of the white squares where the eyes will go. Stitch on the lines that you drew.
3) Open up all the seams, press - using an applique pressing sheet to protect from the fusible. Place and fuse all the remaining white squares between the dots on the grid.
4) Follow the Mondo Bag rectangle instructions, OR the PiX Smart Grid instructions (both more detailed than here), sewing horizontal seams first.
5) Clip between the squares to the stitching. Press the seams in opposite directions.
6) Sew the vertical seams. Press to one side.
7) Finish as you would for any quilt project. Adding a little hanger to the back makes it easy to use as a door banner.
I've included below some graphics using our Midi Bag and Bitty Bag rectangles in similar designs. Have fun with your Boos!
take care,
Mattie
