Hearts & Crafts Project #11 (of 14): Heart Patch

Welcome to Mattie's Hearts & Crafts Blog Series!
Super sweet and oh so quick.  I made this one in 10 minutes! A great way to personalize a jean jacket or jeans, an apron, a doll dress, a blanket, and more.  My granddaughter is 7 - she will be all over this!
 STANDARD METHOD:  Zigzag Applique, "Zigzapping"
(1) 4" square cotton fabric
1 Quiltsmart Sweet Hearts from one panel (I only used the small heart.)
Contrast Thread

INSTRUCTIONS:
1) Cut interfacing hearts out leaving up to about a quarter-inch margin on the large one where possible.  Carefully cut small heart out on the dashed line to free from large heart. Keep the large heart for another project.
In the middle of the small heart, there is a dotted line.  Cut along that.

2) Place heart interfacing rough side (glue dot side) to RIGHT side of SMALL heart fabric.
With this particular fabric, I fussy-cut the phrases - this one says, "Make today awesome!"

3) Stitch on the solid line.

TIP: The smaller the stitch, the smoother the curve.  A 2.0mm or 1-5mm is great on this project.

4) Trim on the dashed line.
5) Turn right side out.  Use a pointer-creaser to get a great smooth line and points.
TIP: Keep the tool in between the fabric seam, not next to the interfacing!
TIP: I like to use the rounded end of the pointer-creaser first, ten the pointed end at the corners or points or to sharpen the seams a bit.  Be very careful!

 6) Finger press the edges and work with the pointer-creaser to smooth the curves.

7) Fuse to the jacket.  For this jacket, I planned to zigzag right over the pocket as I don't tend to use those pockets anyways, and it is easier to sew.  If you want to use the pocket, usually you can un-stitch the pocket, fuse and stitch the patch, then resew the pocket (it might help to have the jean-yellow color thread).

8) Stitch to jacket.  I used the buttonhole stitch instead of a zigzag, and a contrast red thread.

Fabric designed by Helen Dardik for Clothworks, this printed cotton fabric is from the Make Today Awesome collection.

The inside of the pocket.

I hope you enjoyed making a ZigZapp Heart Patch and that you liked this method.  There are about 30 more patterns in our ZigZapps! line. Imagine what you can do!

Make today AWESOME!
